A dental implant provides several advantages over other tooth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like a natural tooth, a dental implant replaces a single tooth without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth. The other common treatment for the loss of a single tooth, a tooth-supported fixed bridge, requires that adjacent teeth be ground down to support the cemented bridge.

Because a dental implant will replace your tooth root, the bone is better preserved. With a bridge, some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth begins to resorb (deteriorate). Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact.

In the long term, a single implant can be more esthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge. Gums can recede around a bridge, leaving a visible defect when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Resorbed bone beneath the bridge can lead to an unattractive smile. And, the cement holding the bridge in place can wash out, allowing bacteria to decay the teeth that anchor the bridge.

Single tooth implants act to replace the entire tooth structure, rather than just a crown or a visible portion of the tooth.

An entire dental implant restoration consists of three main parts:

  • Dental implant. This is a titanium screw-like post that is surgically placed in your jawbone. A dental implant acts to replace a natural tooth root and serve as an anchor to the tooth crown.
  • Crown. An implant-retained crown is a custom restoration that mimics the missing tooth in both function and aesthetics.
  • Abutment. This is a tiny connector that attaches the crown to the dental implant. Abutments are crucial to ensure a stable foundation for your new tooth.

There are several advantages of choosing an implant-supported restoration. The most notable benefit is that the natural teeth do not need to be reduced. Therefore, your healthy tooth structure can be left intact. Another advantage is that implants replace the missing teeth roots. This is beneficial because they stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone degeneration.

Traditional and implant-supported bridges both replace two or more missing teeth in a row. Traditional bridges are often held in place by neighboring teeth that are capped with a dental crown.

Implant-supported bridges are anchored to the jawbone with a single dental implant or multiple implants, depending on the number of missing teeth. Dental implants are titanium posts that replace missing roots. Because the implants integrate with the jawbone, the prosthetic is able to feel and function like natural teeth.

The dental implants are placed in the jaw, creating solid anchors over time as the bone and titanium (typically) integrate.   A bridge of teeth is created to match the shading, shape and size of your existing teeth.  This bridge will then be affixed to the implants.  This procedure will allow you to enjoy a healthy new smile and renewed confidence in only a day.

Following your initial procedure, you will be seen for routine checkups to assess the integration of your implants. This is to ensure that the implant and surrounding bone have integrated successfully.

All-on-4 implants can be a great solution for a variety of problems including:

  • Broken, damaged or decayed teeth – medications, gum disease, accidents and illness are some of the common reasons for reductions in teeth quality. All-on-4 can be a good, cost-beneficial remedy.
  • Ill-fitting, loose dentures – some cope well with dentures, others struggle with loose dentures, speech difficulties and sore spots even if they have a good set of dentures.  Most often bone shrinkage after tooth loss is to blame, especially in the bottom jaw.
  • Missing multiple teeth – if you are missing multiple teeth, Allon4 may be a suitable treatment option.

All-on-4® is a trademarked treatment procedure that essentially involves replacement of all missing teeth in one jaw by using only 4 implants. This procedure is especially beneficial in patients who have lost a lot of bone in the back areas of the mouth.

Dentures cannot be “made into implants”. Implants are metal screws placed into the jawbone to help anchor and support artificial teeth (dentures). It may be possible to have implants placed beneath existing dentures to aid in the stabilization and support for those dentures. This could only be done if the current dentures were otherwise in excellent condition. You should consult with your prosthodontist to have your existing dentures carefully examined.

No, dental implants are fixed solidly in the bone and allow teeth to be replaced in a manner that is closest to natural teeth

All on 4 dental implants can often be used even if you wouldn’t normally be a suitable candidate for implant supported dentures. This is because of the special way the implants are placed at particular angles to avoid bone deficient areas and anatomical limitations.

The procedure to place the 4 titanium screws in your gum takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of your surgery. Your gums are opened and the implant screws are inserted into your jaw bone. Usually, Dr. Rattan will place two straight dental implants at the front of your jaw, and two more implants at an angle in the back of the jaw.

Dr. Rattan will work closely with your referring dentist or a specialist restorative dentist to fit you with a denture 1 to 2 days after the implants are placed.

You need to have a reasonable amount of bone for implant supported dentures, otherwise you may first need to have some bone grafts to strengthen your jaw bone.
